So I was watching a few westerns recently–not the good Charlie Bronson ones–and apparently it was cool for people to just shoot each other especially if it was on the outskirts of towns. I mean, it was like, some bandits were all talking like, “Hey, it’s cool to shoot people as long as it’s outside of town!”
And then the next guy was like, “Okey doke, let’s wait ’til some people walk outta town, and then we’ll shoot ’em!”
And so that’s how bandits took what they wanted, but if they went in to town, the law would pop ’em, so they just stayed out of town, but then vigilantes were all like, “Wait a dang dern minute, if it’s cool to shoot people outta town then let’s get together and go shoot the bandits!”
They’d do that, and then everything would be fine, but there was an odd exception to this don’t shoot people in town rule, and it was that if two people didn’t like each other, they could agree to try to kill each other in the middle of town, and everybody thought that was awesome. Can you imagine?
One cowboy says, “Anyone who wears brown hats is a dandy!”
The other one says, “Now hold on, there, McGinty. I says who ever wears black hats is a horse lover!”
“I don’t like you. Let’s fight!”
“No. I hate you, and I want you dead, but I don’t want to kill you outside of town where it’s cool, I want to kill you in town, but not secretly or safely, I actually wanna give you the chance to kill me, too, so let’s wait ’til tomorry, and we’ll stand there–guns holstered–staring at each other while everyone else stares, too.”
“Okay, okay. I see where you’re goin’, but let’s not shoot each other in the morning; it’s cold, and then in the afternoon it’s too windy.”
“Alright, then it’s settled. We’ll shoot each other at noon, but not regular, high noon!”
